Nutrition and Autoimmune diseases
Autoimmune diseases a case of self-destruction. The immune system helps to protect the body by fighting any foreign agent that invades the body. But in the case of autoimmune diseases, the immune system turns on the tissue it is supposed to protect and attacks it relentlessly. This condition can damage body organs, muscles, joints, tissues, nerves, and the skin. Researchers have listed over 80 autoimmune diseases including rheumatoid arthritis, systemic lupus erythematosus, multiple sclerosis, and so on.
Many studies have been carried out to determine what causes autoimmunity. Some researchers have pointed to the role of inflammation in the body. Studies have also linked the deficiency of vitamin B-12 to autoimmune disorders.
Vitamin B12 is a vital ingredient in the synthesis of red blood cells, DNA, and tissues. When the body is deficient in B-12, it can lead to health complications.
In a 2006 study published in The American Journal of the Medical Sciences, the results of the study suggested that B12 was strongly linked to autoimmune thyroiditis. The study discovered that people with autoimmune thyroiditis had a high incidence of B12 deficiency. 28 percent of the patients who participated in the study were diagnosed with a deficiency of B12, while 31 percent of the participants had pernicious anemia, which is a symptom of B12 deficiency. Also, in a 2004 study which was published in the Journal of Investigative Allergology and Clinical Immunology, a high prevalence of B12 deficiency was found in patients with chronic urticaria.
According to the results of a study conducted by Dr. John McDougal which investigated the causes of multiple sclerosis, results of the study suggests that multiple sclerosis was linked to the consumption of animal fat. The study concluded that multiple sclerosis could be treated with a plant-based diet.
Over the years, dieticians have proven that a proper diet rich in antioxidants can help to reduce the symptoms of autoimmune diseases. In a 2011 study published in the Bosnian Journal of Basic Medical Science, it was discovered that patients with multiple sclerosis were low in antioxidants.
According to Donna Sigmond, RD, who is a dietician who specializes in autoimmune diseases, she recommends that patients maintain an anti-inflammatory diet consisting of green leafy vegetables and flaxseed oil. She also advises that patients with autoimmune diseases should avoid inflammatory foods and focus more on a diet rich in vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants.
Finally, in a study published in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology in 2006, researchers discovered that a diet high in whole plant foods helped to reduce the effects of autoimmune diseases. To eat your way out of autoimmune diseases, dieticians recommend a proper nutrition consisting of fruits, whole grains, nuts, seeds, legumes, vegetables, extra-virgin olive oil, tea, spices and herbs and dark chocolates.
